Alice Darby - Ontario, CA

Alice Darby
A Film Connection Student's Parent - Ontario, CA

My son has never liked school, he found schooling very difficult and was always getting into trouble. One thing we noticed though, he always enjoyed watching programs about making movies. So Last May my husband and I enrolled him at www.filmconnection.com, that was the best decision we have ever made. Not only is he learning something that interests him, he is also improving his reading and writing skills into the bargain.

He has settled down and is no longer in trouble. This course has matured him beyond his years. He gets on famously with Robert, his mentor. He rally has taken him under his wing. They talk about lots of stuff, not just film editing (his chosen field) Thank you filmconnection for giving my son back his future.

Fort Lauderdale. FL Film Connection Student

Unfortunately I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, so I have to work, but I still want to learn to be a Foley artist. That’s why I’m grateful to www.filmconnection.com for giving me the opportunity to learn at my convenience. My studying fits around my work schedule, so I don’t feel pressurized.

The one on one mentoring really helps as well, my mentor is the bomb, there’s nothing this guy doesn’t know and he is so willing to pass on all this invaluable information to me. I’m so grateful to him and to filmconnection.

Jason West - Martensdale, Iowa

Jason West
Martensdale, Iowa - Film Connection Student

Ever since I watched those old Black & White Harold Lloyd movies when I was a kid I have wanted to make movies. Unfortunately for me, I live in Iowa and not Hollywood. How was I going to learn the craft if I didn’t live in LA? Easy I enrolled with www.filmconnection.com, and because I can work from home there were no expensive relocation costs. This is easily the best thing I have ever done. Thank you, filmconnection.

Aren't period pieces great? Sophia Coppola's Marie Antoinette was like a masterpiece of a painting brought to life in the silver screen. We're moved from our places in the theater and into the time period itself. We experience something from hundreds of years ago. It enables us to be a part of our history that we thought long gone, but truth is, in some ways, we can always relive it.

Now, a lot of the success of period pieces is attention to details, especially with the costumes. You'd be amazed at how difficult it can be just to outfit period pieces. The eighties might be known for its shoulder pads, among other things, but you can't just place a bunch of pads in the actors' shoulders and say the scene is from the eighties. No, it will catch the attention of the audience, and they won't be brought back to that period in time that you wanted them to go to. It makes the film less realistic, and in that essence, when the viewers are no longer able to believe, the movie is done. Finished.

Designing the costumes gives the audience that film connection to be a part of that movie and making them believe it. Costumes might be a small fish in a pond of big fishes for the directors, producers, and actors, but you've got to admit, without people paying attention to these things onscreen, all the hard work would be done. It's not as simple a job as one might thing. And what do you know, it helps that we get to shop.
