My parents are your standard working class folk. They have worked hard all their lives. They did not have the luxury of wealth in order to put me through 4 years of university in order to get a degree in cinematography. So, during and after high school I worked in a fast food delivery restaurant in order to save up the cash I would need to enroll with Film Connection. After I graduated I was able to find a full time job. Fortunately with film connection you can study in your spare time as the program is built around you. I work on real sets alongside real pros and my mentor gives me homework assignments that must be completed within a specified time. Then and only then you move on to the next stage. People told me that I needed to go to university for 4 years if I wanted to be qualified to work in the film business. They also said that studios were only interested in what diploma you had on your wall. What a crock. Studios don’t care if you went to some fancy college or if you went to Film School. All a studio boss is interested in is how qualified you are to do the job at hand. 3 Years ago I completed my 6 month mentor/ apprentice program with Film Connection and when I went to interviews I was told that they actually looked away from university grads as they tend to have a very narrow perspective when it comes to film making. They have taken on the quirks of their college professor and believed that only his way of thinking was correct, whereas someone who learned in an actual film studio setting was far more open to new ideas and thinking. Luckily, my mentor was a working professional who knew what he was doing. He passed on all his vast knowledge and also many inside tips. This knowledge came in handy when I interviewed for a position at a local studio here in Tucson, Arizona. My mentor came with me for moral support and we demonstrated what I had learned. Needless to say I got the job and have been working with them for three and a half years now. I am very happy where I am working and I take it they are happy with me. So, it doesn’t take fancy degrees to get work, it takes the ability to do the given job. The movie industry is one of the most exciting in the world. The big studios, the stars are known worldwide. At the grand old age of 28 I have decided to change my life. I have worked retail since leaving college. It was a safe career back then. It was also soul destroying and tedious. However, since the economic downturn the job has been a lot less secure what with shop closures and the credit crunch affecting sales. So 4 months ago I decided to look into a career as a sound technician. I had always been interested in the sound part of movies. I learned more in 6 months than a friend learned in 2 years at a competitors program. Although there was a great deal to learn and take in, my mentor made sure that I learned a bit at a time and tested me to ensure that I fully understood all that I had learned. I was also able to continue working during the course so that was great as it meant that I did not have a large debt after finishing the course. The strange thing about Las Vegas, apart from the fact that it is a city built in the middle of a desert is the fact that despite the fact that as a state it lies next to California (the home of Hollywood) there is very little opportunity to go to film school within the city. I’m a major fan of TV crime dramas, my favorites are CSI New York, CSI Miami and NCIS and my biggest dream would be to be behind the camera filming one of these fantastic shows. Luckily I live in New York and can wander around looking at locations. My mentor Danny has taught me so much. Not just the obvious stuff to do with cameras and lighting, but also how to make a location work for you, how to make use of the surroundings, even where the best sounds are in the city. He should know he was born and bred in the city. He has also introduced me to several of his associates within the business, so things are very promising. I’m about to make a short film about real life crime in New York and with Danny’s help will show it to several NY film producers. With any luck something big will come of it. Ever since watching E.T. when I was a little kid I have followed Steven Spielberg’s work. From Jaws, the afore mentioned E.T. Jurassic Park , Schindler’s List, Duel, Saving Private Ryan among many others, I have followed his work very closely. Whenever I purchased one of his movies on DVD I would immediately watch the “making off” often before viewing the actual movie. I loved watching him explain just what drives him, the way he interacts with the talent and crew. There’s a certain magic that surrounds him. I have always been fascinated how the movie makers made all those impressive sounds you hear in the movies. For example the roar of the T-Rex in Jurassic Park and the sound of the meteors striking the Moon in Armageddon. Then I watched the “making of” documentaries on their respective DVD’s. But rather than becoming disillusioned by their methods I was even more intrigued by their methods. So right after finishing high school I decided to enroll at www.filmconnection.com. They utilize a one-on-one mentoring system, where each student has access to their own tutor.

Someone who actually works within the industry, and has connections within the movie making business. My mentor is Perry and thanks to him I am learning everything I need to know (and a lot more besides) about sound design. He has helped me make several short films with a leaning toward sound effects. He has also helped me to pitch these films to prospective moviemakers and things have been very positive. I come from a small town in Central Alaska and to be honest there’s not a lot for the average Joe to do but get drunk, but as a person who enjoys watching wildlife there’s a lot for me here. Combine that with my love of movie making and it’s perfect. With the help of my mentor Jason I am picking up all sorts of hints and tips for wildlife filmmaking.

Learning how to compose a short, how to make the most of available light, making a hide, even how to tempt otherwise shy creatures to you, so that you can get that “wow” shot. When I was 14 I directed my own war movie. It starred my classmates whilst I barked directions to them. I still have that movie. Ever wondered how they get all those fantastic sound effects in hit movies such as Jurassic Park and Toy Story 2? Well it’s all down to a group of guys called Foley artists. On a film set a Foley artist is the person who creates many of the sound effects in a film, working with a recording engineer. They can turn a grumbling elephant or a roaring lion into a very angry T-Rex. Thanks to www.filmconnection.com and my mentor Ryan that is what I am doing right now. They taught me everything they knew about movie sound and how it’s produced, creating sound and enhancing existing sound. In many movies sound is just as important and the image, sometimes more so. There would be no sci-fi or horror movies without the Foley artist and sound engineer. They broke everything into small chunks so it was easier to take it all in. They got me connected within the industry. I am now working in Los Angeles for a major studio thanks to www.filmconnection.com.

With a keen interest in film making and also a love for natural history I had always been interested in making a natural history film. I live in Massachusetts and as a kid I was lucky enough to watch them filming some scenes from the series Dawson’s Creek nearby. Sure it was great to see the cast and watch them acting, but my big buzz was watching all the back stage stuff, the director shouting “Action” the camera man deciding which lens to use, the sound engineer, even the runner. The atmosphere was electric.
